A visit to Agaete works best when you separate three places: the town centre, Puerto de las Nieves on the coast and the valley inland. They are not interchangeable names for the ferry terminal. Combine the town and harbour for a relaxed outing, adding the valley when you have time for a separate visit.

This guide focuses on things to do in Agaete. For a comparison with other destinations, use our overview of Gran Canaria’s towns and villages.

Choose a manageable plan

  • A morning: explore the town, then continue to Puerto de las Nieves.
  • A day: add lunch and a coastal stroll without making swimming essential.
  • For agricultural scenery: allow a separate part of the day for the valley and arrange any farm visit beforehand.

These are suggested plans rather than guaranteed timings. From the southern resorts, allow for the drive back instead of adding stops across the whole north coast.

Agaete town and Huerto de las Flores

Begin around the church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and explore the streets on foot. The pleasure is in a short walk, a café stop and the surrounding houses rather than a long checklist of monuments.

Huerto de las Flores is a botanical garden within the town, separate from the street walk. Check opening arrangements before making it your main stop. If it is closed, continue with the town and harbour; there is no need to replace it with an unplanned mountain walk.

Puerto de las Nieves: the seafront and lunch

Puerto de las Nieves is Agaete’s coastal settlement. Walk around the visitor areas, look for the chapel of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and enjoy the mountain coastline. The ferry port remains a working transport facility, so keep to public pedestrian areas.

For lunch, check the menu and ask about the fish available and how it is priced, particularly if sold by weight. A waterfront location does not guarantee locally caught fish. Our Gran Canaria food guide helps you identify specialities without turning the outing into a full food tour.

Las Salinas natural pools

Las Salinas natural pools near Puerto de las Nieves in Agaete
Las Salinas is an exposed coastal setting; sea conditions determine whether swimming is appropriate.

Las Salinas offers another view of Agaete’s coastline. These are natural sea pools, not a conventional swimming pool: swell, tides, slippery access and local signs determine whether entering the water is sensible. Observe closures and never cross an exposed area just for a photograph.

In rough conditions, choose an activity away from wave-washed areas. You do not need to descend to every platform to appreciate the coast.

A separate visit to the valley

Agaete’s valley has agricultural scenery with fruit, coffee and vines. Add it if that interests you, allowing for another journey. Farms are not automatically open to visitors, and cultivated land is not an invitation to walk through private property.

For a farm visit or tasting, confirm booking, language, opening and what is included directly with the business. A marked mountain route also needs its own preparation; it should not be treated as a casual extra to the town visit.

Getting there and moving between stops

With a hire car, identify legal parking in each area rather than driving around narrow streets looking for a space beside every attraction. Without a car, check current connections, the correct stop and your return service with Global. The town and ferry port are different destinations when choosing a stop.

Frequently asked questions

Are Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves the same place?

The harbour settlement belongs to Agaete, but it is a different stop from the town centre. Check which one you have selected for transport or accommodation.

Is it worth visiting without swimming?

Yes. Focus on the town, harbour and lunch; swimming is optional and depends on conditions.

Can I visit the valley without a booking?

Travelling through the area does not give access to private farms. Agricultural visits and tastings may need advance arrangements.
