If this is your first trip to the island, five places capture Gran Canaria’s variety especially well: dunes, mountains, a colourful harbour town, the capital and the greener northwest. This list of places to visit in Gran Canaria is not meant to cover everything, but to help you prioritise the island’s most useful highlights.
1. Maspalomas Dunes
The Maspalomas Dunes are one of Gran Canaria’s most recognisable landscapes. Sand, ocean and the lighthouse area make this an easy visit to combine with a day in the south.

2. Roque Nublo
The interior shows a completely different Gran Canaria. Roque Nublo, pine forest, ravines and mountain viewpoints make the highlands worth at least half a day.

3. Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán combines a marina, colourful buildings, pedestrian streets and a small beach in a compact area. It works well for a relaxed few hours in the southwest.

4. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The capital adds a different side to the island: historic Vegueta, Triana, museums, markets and Las Canteras Beach can fill a full day without needing a car.

5. Agaete
Agaete brings a more Atlantic feel and a very different northwest landscape. Puerto de las Nieves, the surrounding mountains and a slower pace make it a useful stop on a north-coast route.
If you drive, avoid trying to combine too many mountain and coastal stops in one day. Distances can look short on the map, while inland roads take longer than coastal motorways.
How to combine these five Gran Canaria highlights
Do not try to see all five in one day. Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán can fit into separate southern days, Roque Nublo deserves its own mountain outing, Las Palmas works as a city day, and Agaete fits naturally into a northwest route.
